Finally! My website has arrived in 2011!

After over a year of awkward low-res boredom, I’m now hosting my videos on Vimeo. This means that all my work can now be viewed in the original resolution. If you are too lazy to get up from your couch for this news: DON’T! All the content is now comfortably viewable on iDevices.

Thanks to @designiac for giving me the much needed kick in the butt. ;)

Joturial Ep. 01

In this first tutorial I cover some of the steps I take when working with 3D tracker data and live shot footage in Cinema 4D.

I also discuss how to use my very own compZoomCam camera rig, that will give you a 2D zoom in the view port and will make matching your scenes with your footage a lot easier (You can get it here).

I just updated my homepage with a project that I did earlier this year for the Audi A1 booth at the Automobilsalon trade fair in Geneva.

Because of the super wide screen format the little video on my page doesn’t quite do it justice, so I suggest you also take the time to have a look at the high resolution version and the on location footage right from the booth.

It’s better to fade out than to burn away. -Kurt Cobain (sort of…)

“Fade Out is” a stunning visual installation by media artists Daito Manabe and Motoi Ishibashi.

A webcam picture is recreated by laser beams shooting little rectangles of light on a wall coated with photoluminescent paint. The tonal values are achieved by the fading of the rectangles and the temporal intervals of the light bursts.

Not a replacement for your plasma TV, but a mesmerizing sight nevertheless.

I was asked by Mutabor Design GmbH to help them with the 3D execution of this lush self promotional film to go along with the relaunch of their homepage.

Apart from the intro, the objective was to create three distinct worlds that represent the spirit of the divisions white, black and the newly installed silver.

This post was originally supposed to be simply about Cass McCombs.

On how I loved his music ever since I’ve seen Jerry Hsu skate on top of his “Sacred Heart” in the “Bag of Suck” video, on how I loved the music even more when I discovered his latest and more toned down album “Catacombs”, how I listened to the album to death during my time in Copenhagen and how I just rediscovered the album on a boat while watching a beautiful sundown.

Instead this post is now a rant about geoblocking. When looking for a good quality link for his “The Executioner’s Song” video I had to find out, that his record label Domino Records has blocked all of his videos in Germany.

During the last years the so called geoblocking has become an utterly annoying trend amongst record labels around the world and the worst part is that I honestly can’t understand why they are trying to do with that.

I understand why sites like Hulu lock out everybody except for US resident. They want to save bandwith and target a narrow market with the advertisements they show. Still questionable, but there is a chain of thought going on.

On the other hand Youtube operates globally. You’ll have to endure their ads tailored to your viewing habbits weather you’re in the US or the Tundra. The record labels don’t have to pay to have their videos on there and it’s not their bandwith they are wasting, so why give all the fans a massive smack in the mouth and tell them they are only second rate because they happen to live in some other country? I believe that especially the smaller indy acts like Cass, who often times get a big part of their fanbase by word of mouth (or word of post in this case), heavily benefit from people having access to their music on the web.

I even think that this whole situation is neither the artists or the labels fault but some legal issue mindfuck that everybody holds on to without even thinking for one secont what this communicates to the people locked out.

The funny part is, that the video and the music gets out anyhow. I managed to find the video to the above mentioned song by some other user who has reuploaded it. The only difference is that now the video and audio quality is massively degenerated, so when the record label really wants to exercise control over it’s content it is really just giving it away to other people who can’t give it the same care and thought they can.

Don’t fool yourself people. The internet is a wide open place where ideas and content will be delivered to the ones who demand it. Any attempt to interfere with that is bound to fail.

I don’t know if this will be the case forever or if at some time in the future governments and big corporations will manage to put the handcuffs on this wonderfully free vehicle but until then, enjoy Cass McCombs beautiful song.

I didn’t believe it would ever come to this. My sloppy, self programmed homepage is online after all.

As for now there is only my ancient 2009 showreel on there yet, but seeing the page this scarce will hopefully put some pressure on me to do something about it.

Anyways, this thing is still super buggy but I’m planning to give it some TLC whenever I can.

If there’s one thing that stuck with me from my time in Copenhagen it’s the love for a very special retro arcade game called Donkey Kong.

Back in the day when the monkey still was a tragic villain opposed to the goofy, good hearted fellow that he is today and Mario was still called Jumpman and the first faulty English localization would ask you ‘How high can you try?’ instead of ‘get’.

It’s a unsurpassed simplistic yet extremely challenging gaming experience that made the hours of rendering vanish into thin air.

This expressionistic adaption by Brock Davis aka Laser Bread is probably the most original, instantly recognizable and praise worthy homage to the game I’ve ever seen.

The paintings of Dig Dug and Missile Command are equally good, but I just don’t have the same strong connection to those games. If he did one of Space Invaders on the other hand it would be a strong competition.

Ghetto Boys - “Still”

In the year 1996 three fine young lads from Houston, Texas brought us this juicy chunk of murda musik. Three years later Dr. Dre put out another joint with the same name. Unfortunately the song wasn’t nearly as hateful and worse, nobody was rapping about shooting people, thus rendering it useless for fans of the mm genre.

This tune on the other hand is pure, ruff thugsta poetry right from tha hood where bruvas be be triflin and a grand won’t come for free and even when crackin’ an occasional smile you betta remember, ain’t a damn thing funny.

Perfect sountdrack for beating up a printer by the way. (Props to Kay for pointing the track out to me).
